Amref Flying Doctors aims to create lasting health change in Africa. As the largest African healthcare organisation, we believe it is important that everyone has the right to a healthy and safe life, and we rely on the strength of the African people. However, there is a global chronic shortage of healthworkers, with the largest burden in Africa. This shortage of medical personnel is the biggest threat to the health of people in Africa.

Since 1957, we work on different themes, including ‘Human Resources for Health’. This includes educating and training health workers via internet and mobile phones (digital innovations) and ensuring communities have increased access to health services. Additionally, we started the Amref International University to increase access to all who want to work in healthcare, especially community health.

Do you want to gain work experience within our international organization with passionate colleagues and thereby contribute to better health and a stronger health workforce in Africa? Then this is your chance!

For our office in Leiden, per September 2022, we are looking for a:

3 - 5 days a week

What are you going to do?

As an intern working on the theme ‘Human Resources for Health’ within the Programmes department, you are involved in various support activities for colleagues who work in the field ‘Human Resources for Health (HRH)’. You will help to organize meetings, contribute to reporting on ongoing projects (externally and/or internally) and identify lessons learned. The internship period is for a minimum of 5 months. In this position, there is a lot of room to learn more about the project and programme management within a developmental organization, and you get to know the dynamics of an organization like ours. There is plenty of room for own initiative and your qualities and interests are taken into account.

Do you have an affinity with development cooperation, are you proactive and ready to take on a variety of tasks? Then we are looking for you!

What are you bringing?

  • You are a third- or fourth-year student with a HBO or WO level of thinking in a field of study relevant to this internship (international relations, social sciences, etc.);
  • You are registered as a student at an educational institution during your entire internship period;
  • You are in possession of a proof of residence for the Netherlands (visa, EU citizenship, etc.);
  • At the time of internship, you are living in The Netherlands and are in possession of a Dutch bank account;
  • You have a good command of the English language (both orally and in writing);
  • You have an affinity with development cooperation;
  • You are culturally sensitive, non-judgmental and open-minded;
  • You are enthusiastic, creative, independent and enterprising.

What do we offer you?

A special mission; to contribute to a healthy and strong Africa. With about sixty enthusiastic colleagues you work together in a casual and professional working atmosphere in which you can operate independently in an international organization based in Leiden. Although Dutch is the common language spoken at the organisation, we are open to Dutch and non-Dutch speakers. You will receive an internship allowance. Public transport reimbursement is possible if you do not have a student public transport pass (Student OV-kaart). Start date is beginning September, and with a duration of at least 5 months.

We also offer:

  • a good working atmosphere in an enthusiastic team;
  • an international working environment;
  • expert guidance.
